This 1963 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ7 Mk IIA is finished in metallic beige over natural leather and powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with electric overdrive. Equipment includes a black convertible top, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, a hood scoop, dual SU carburetors, front bucket seats, a heater, and a banjo-style steering wheel. The seller acquired the car in 2022 and subsequently spent over $39k on rebuilding the engine, servicing the transmission and overdrive, and replacing the convertible top. This Austin-Healey is now offered with manufacturer’s literature, service records dating to 1995, a binder of documentation, and a transferable New York registration in the seller’s name.
The car is finished in metallic beige and features a hood scoop, dual fender-mounted side mirrors, bright trim, and chrome bumpers with overriders. A bare-metal repaint was performed in 1995, which included welding patch panels into the fenders, floor pan, and left rocker panel and coating the floor pan and inner rockers with corrosion-resistant paint. The windshield glass and weather seals were replaced in 1996. The left fender and right door were repaired and color-blended in 2022. The same year the soft top was replaced and the rear metal top bow was repaired.
The painted 15″ wire wheels are are mounted with Nexen SB-802 tires, and the knock-off spinners were replaced in 2022. A matching spare wheel is stowed in the trunk. The suspension features independent front coil springs and a rear live axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The center link tie rod ends were replaced in 2023.
The seats were reupholstered in natural leather and vinyl in 1996, at which time pre-shaped seat foam, Rolls-Royce Cumberland carpeting, and a trunk matting kit were installed. Austin-Healey-branded floor mats line the footwells, and appointments include tan lap seatbelts, a wood shift knob, door storage pockets, a dash-mounted rear-view mirror, and heater and ventilation controls. Work in 2022 included repairing the steering column and replacing the turn signal and headlight switches.
The banjo-style steering wheel was installed in 2022 and frames Smiths white-dial instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature, and a fuel-level gauge, the latter of which was sent to England to be rebuilt and calibrated in 2023. The five-digit odometer shows 74k miles, approximately 400 of which were added under current ownership.
The 2.9-liter BMC C-Series inline-six was rebuilt in 2022 and 2023. Work included boring and honing the block .060″ over, grinding the crank, performing a valve job, and resurfacing the cylinder head. The block was painted light green, an aluminum oil pan was fitted, and the engine was reassembled with a replacement camshaft, tappets, pistons, rings, bearings, freeze plugs, double-row timing chain, water pump, and oil pump. The engine compartment and frame rails were degreased and repainted at that time.
The fuel system was also refreshed as part of the 2022-2023 engine-out service. Work included cleaning the fuel tank, replacing the fuel lines, rebuilding the carburetors, and installing a replacement SU square-body fuel pump. The radiator was also repaired and the upper and lower hoses were replaced.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with a Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. The transmission was disassembled and the gaskets were replaced in 2023. The clutch disc, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing were replaced at that time, and the electric overdrive solenoid and actuator shaft were repaired.
