This 1962 Austin-Healey 3000 BT7 Mk II was dispatched to Los Angeles, California, in January 1962 and underwent a refurbishment in the late 1980s. Powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, the car is finished in black and burgundy over black leather upholstery. Features include a black hardtop, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, electronic ignition, a gear-reduction starter, a stainless-steel exhaust system, and an aftermarket audio system. This 3000 Mk II was purchased by the current owner in 2008 and is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, service records, a workshop manual, trophies earned by the vehicle, a convertible top, side curtains, a tonneau cover, a car cover, tire-changing tools, and a California title in the owner’s name.
The car was repainted in black with orange accent lines separating the burgundy lower sections during the aforementioned refurbishment. The removable black hardtop has a roof vent. Other equipment includes fender-mounted side mirrors, a hood scoop, dual exhaust outlets, bright trim, and chrome bumpers with overriders. A Jaguar-style air vent has been added behind the left-front wheel. The lighting has been updated with H4 halogen headlights and LED turn signals and taillights. An aged convertible top, side curtains, and a tonneau cover will accompany the vehicle. Chipped paint and other imperfections are visible.
Chrome-finished 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 185/65 Bridgestone Potenza tires. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The rebuilt suspension utilizes polyurethane bushings and Bilstein front and rear shocks.
The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats that have been retrimmed in black leather over replacement padding. Interior appointments include front lap belts, two 12-volt power outlets, a cabin heater, door-panel storage pockets, a passenger-side grab handle, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, and replacement black carpeting. A Valor DVD head unit plays through a pair of Pioneer speakers in the center stack, two Infinity speakers positioned in the rear footwells, and tweeters located in each door panel. The heater-control panel, knobs, gearshift boot and knob, and the rearview mirror have been replaced. A fire extinguisher is secured behind the passenger seat.
The banjo-style steering wheel has an aftermarket wrap and is attached to an adjustable column. Smiths white-dial instrumentation consists of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 33k miles, approximately 18k of which were added under current ownership. The seller notes that the clock and the temperature gauge are inoperative.
The 2.9-liter inline-six featured triple SU HS4 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 136 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque. The engine was rebuilt during the 1980s refurbishment, the radiator has been recored, and the wiring harness and other parts were replaced. The electrical system has been converted to negative ground, and other modifications include the following:
Aluminum valve cover
Electronic ignition
Gear-reduction starter
Spin-on oil-filter adapter
Open-element air cleaners
Five-blade “Texas” cooling fan
Stainless-steel exhaust system
The battery was replaced in April 2024. A battery-disconnect switch has been added but is deactivated.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. The transmission has been overhauled with replacement of the seals and bearings. The differential was regeared to a 3.5:1 ratio.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists the factory colors, equipment, and serial numbers along with build dates in December 1961.
The car’s chassis number is HBT7L17139, whereas the California title adds a “62” prefix to that sequence.
