This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 was built in August 1966 and is powered by a 2.9L inline-six linked to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The car was acquired by the seller in 2020 as a stalled project following a rebuild of the drivetrain, a suspension overhaul, and body repairs. Work performed under current ownership is said to have included repainting the car in red, retrimming the interior in black vinyl, fitting a stainless-steel dual exhaust system, and refreshing the fuel, braking, cooling, and clutch systems. Equipment includes 15” wire wheels, a black soft top, burl wood interior trim, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, and dual SU carburetors. This BJ8 is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, refurbishment photos, a soft top boot, and transferable Connecticut registration in the seller’s name.
The car left the factory finished in Dark British Racing Green, and the chassis and body were stripped and repaired before a repaint in red under current ownership. Exterior brightwork was re-chromed or replaced along with the black soft top and weatherstripping. Additional exterior features include fender-mounted side mirrors, vent windows, and chrome bumpers with overriders.
Chrome-finished 15” knockoff wire wheels are retained with two-eared spinners and mounted with 165-series Vredestein Sprint Classic tires that show 2022 production date codes. A painted spare wheel wrapped in an older Michelin tire is stored in the trunk. The rear suspension features dual radius arms, and stopping power is provided by disc brakes up front and drums out back. The seller states that the suspension was overhauled under prior ownership, and the brakes were overhauled following their acquisition.
The 2+2 cabin features low-back front bucket seats and rear jump seats trimmed in black vinyl with silver piping along with a color-coordinated dash pad and door panels. Replacement carpets and underlayment were installed under current ownership, per the seller. Burl wood veneers adorn the dash fascia, and additional appointments include a wood shifter knob, a heater, and lap belts for front occupants.
The wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline accompanied by a 140-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 66k miles, approximately 300 of which have been added under current ownership. True mileage is unknown.
The 2.9-liter inline-six was rated at 148 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque when new. Work performed under current ownership is said to have included rebuilding the dual SU HD8 carburetors as well as replacing the fuel tank and fuel pump.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with an electrically actuated Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit that can be engaged in third and fourth gears. The transmission, overdrive unit, and differential were reportedly rebuilt under prior ownership, and the clutch hydraulics were refreshed under current ownership. A polished stainless-steel dual exhaust system terminates in twin exhaust outlets.
The BMIHT certificate indicates that the car was dispatched on September 2, 1966, for the North American export market and lists factory equipment and identification numbers.
