This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was completed on July 8, 1965, and was refurbished in 2013 before it was purchased by the seller later that year. The car is finished in metallic beige over red leather upholstery, and power comes from a rebuilt, overbored 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Equipment includes a PerTronix distributor, 15″ chrome wire wheels, front disc brakes, a black soft top, chrome bumpers with overriders, Lucas driving lamps, a heater, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, and an adjustable steering column. This BJ8 is now offered with a copy of a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, refurbishment photos, a list of maintenance performed under the seller’s ownership, and a clean Massachusetts title in the seller’s name.
Delivered from the factory in Healey Blue, the body was disassembled and stripped during the refurbishment before undergoing a color change to Metallic Golden Beige using two-stage paint. Equipment includes a black soft top with a matching boot as well as Lucas driving lamps, a hood scoop, vent windows, and dual side-view mirrors. A replacement rear bumper was installed in September 2017. Paintwork on front and rear panels were reportedly performed under the seller’s ownership.
The 60-spoke chrome wire wheels feature knock-off hubs, and they are mounted with 165/80R15 Nexen SB-802 tires. A matching spare wheel and tire are mounted in the trunk. The suspension was disassembled in June 2019 and fitted with replacement front bushings and rear shocks. The brakes were also serviced at that time with the installation of a replacement brake booster and rebuilds of the front calipers.
The 2+2 cabin features low-back front bucket seats and rear jump seats that were reupholstered in red leather during the 2013 refurbishment. Red carpets line the floors, and Dynamat insulation was added to the transmission tunnel and floors in 2016. Additional equipment includes burl wood dash panels, a heater, front lap belts, and black Austin-Healey-branded front floor mats.
The Moto-Lita steering wheel is mounted on an adjustable column ahead of Smiths instrumentation that includes a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The speedometer and fuel-level gauge were rebuilt in July 2019, and the odometer was reset at that time. The five-digit odometer shows 650 miles, and approximately 1,500 miles have been added under the seller’s ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 2.9-liter inline-six was rebuilt in 2019 with .040″-over pistons, new cam and rod bearings, bronze valve guides, a timing chain tensioner, and gaskets. The twin SU carburetors were also rebuilt at that time, and a PerTronix distributor, replacement radiator, and electric cooling fan were also installed.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive that was overhauled in 2016 and removed and resealed in December 2020. Replacement clutch cylinders were also installed at that time.
The copy of the BMIHT certificate indicates that the car was despatched on July 9, 1965, for the North American export market and lists factory equipment and identification numbers.
