This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was built in January 1965 and dispatched to New York in March of that year. The car was acquired as a stalled refurbishment project by the seller in 2023, reportedly following approximately 46 years of storage. Subsequent work involved a repaint and reupholstered interior along with resealing the 2.9-liter inline-six, rebuilding the dual SU carburetors, overhauling the suspension and brakes, replacing the fuel tank and pump, and refreshing the four-speed manual transmission, overdrive unit, clutch, and differential. It is finished in Healey Blue and Old English White over blue Ambla vinyl and is equipped with a blue soft top, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, a top boot, a tonneau cover, a hood scoop, a cabin heater, and front bucket seats. This 3000 Mk III is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate and Connecticut registration in the seller’s name.
Finished from the factory in black, the car was repainted in Healey Blue and Old English White under current ownership. Brightwork was re-chromed or replaced as necessary and a replacement blue mohair soft top and matching boot were also installed.
The 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires measuring 165HR15 and showing date codes from 2024. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The seller states that the steering, suspension, and brake systems were overhauled under current ownership.
The 2+2 cabin was reupholstered under current ownership and features bucket seats trimmed in blue Ambla vinyl. Replacement carpets were also installed, and interior appointments include a cabin heater, a locking glovebox, and wood trim.
The banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 50k miles, approximately 500 of which were added under current ownership.
The 2.9-liter inline-six was resealed under current ownership, and the piston rings, bearings, freeze plugs, water pump, and valve seals were replaced. A spin-on oil filter has been added, and additional work included rebuilding the dual SU HD8 carburetors and replacing the fuel tank, pump, and lines.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. The clutch, transmission, overdrive unit, differential, and clutch hydraulics were refreshed during the refurbishment.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate lists a build date in January 1965 for the North American market and shows factory equipment and identification numbers.
