This late-model Austin Healey 3000 MkIII offers the classic British sports car experience and benefits from having been garage-stored whenever not in use over the last 28 years.

Power comes from a 2.9-litre straight-six, producing around 150hp, driving the rear wheels via a manual gearbox with overdrive.

Being a 1965 model, it benefits from big-throated twin SU carburettors and a new higher-lift camshaft to boost the power. There is also a walnut veneer dash.

As with all the MkIII ‘BJ8’ Healeys, this car is also a 2+2 (sports convertible, in Austin-Healey’s terms).

The seller has owned the car for 28 years.

The odometer shows 44,301 miles. The seller notes that while the speedometer readout is in km/h, they understand that the odometer is recording in miles.

Equipment and features

This Healey is finished in the popular hue of Colorado Red paintwork, accented by chrome front and rear bumpers, and other exterior trim including a luggage rack.

There is a black soft-top roof and wire-spoke wheels with knock-off hubcaps.

Inside, the car is finished in black vinyl upholstery for the front and rear seats and centre console, with a dash of red piping trim on the transmission tunnel.

The large thin-spoked steering wheel sits in front of a cluster of Smiths gauges that show fuel, water temperature and oil temperature, as well as the speedometer and revcounter.

There is also a cabin heater, an overdrive switch and, being a later car, a gearstick that sprouts centrally from the transmission tunnel (rather than the offset arrangement of earlier models).

The car comes complete with original handbooks.

Condition

The seller notes that the doors are not perfectly flush to the body, and while the soft top has recently been replaced, it does not fit tightly to the door windows in the rear – though they are not sure if this is a common foible with these Austin-Healeys. While the paint has blemishes including scratches, dents and some differences in the finish, the seller reports that it is still a presentable example – bidders should review the photos in detail. The upholstery has come loose in a few places at the seams and has minor scuffs and scratches, while the varnish on the wood veneer dash is cracked and has partially come away.

There is some vibration from the wheels at higher speeds.

The windscreen washer does not work and neither do the lights in the instrument cluster.

The most recent technical inspection was on 25 August 2023 and resulted in no advisories.

Service history

The last maintenance was carried out in July 2023 by Autoscand AB.

The exhaust system has recently been changed.

Unfortunately, the seller is missing receipts and service history, but reports that the engine was renovated in the early 2000s.
