This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III is a Canadian-market example that is believed to have undergone a repaint as well as interior and mechanical work during a refurbishment completed in the 1990s. Finished in red with a black soft top over red vinyl upholstery, the car is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six fitted with dual SU HD8 carburetors. Shifting is through a four-speed manual transmission mated to a Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive unit, and further equipment includes 72-spoke wire wheels, front disc brakes, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. This 3000 Mk III was acquired by the current owner in 2016 and is now offered on dealer consignment by Griot’s Motors, a BaT Local Partner, with recent records and a Washington State title.

The body is believed to have been repainted as part of the aforementioned 1990s refurbishment. The car wears a replacement black soft top paired with a color-coordinated top boot and tonneau cover, and further details include a hood scoop, door-mounted mirrors, dual exhaust outlets, and chrome bumpers with overriders. There is a tear in the soft top window.

The 72-spoke wire wheels measure 15″ in diameter and are secured by two-eared knock-offs.The car rides on 195/70 Vredestein T-Trac tires, while braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The suspension was reportedly rebuilt in the course of the 1990s refurbishment, and work in 2026 involved replacing the front brake pads as well as the rear wheel cylinders and brake shoes. The selling dealer notes that the tie rods and front suspension bushings are old.

The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats trimmed in red vinyl accompanied by a color-coordinated center console and door panels. Interior work as part of the 1990s refurbishment is said to have involved installing a wood-rimmed steering wheel, replacing the wood dash panels, changing the carpets, and refurbishing the wiring harness.

Black-dial Smiths instrumentation consists of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 96k miles, approximately 3k of which were added under current ownership. The speedometer does not illuminate, and true mileage is unknown.

The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. The engine and carburetors were reportedly rebuilt in the course of the 1990s refurbishment. The selling dealer notes that the choke is not operating correctly and recommends performing a tune-up.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive, both of which were reportedly rebuilt as part of the 1990s refurbishment.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists production information and colors, as well as initial delivery to Canada.

The current Washington State title carries an “Antique” brand.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
