Lot #229922
This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was acquired by the current owner more than 30 years ago from his father and it was restored by Autofarm Austin-Healey Parts and Restorations in Ontario, Canada, circa 2003. Work involved rebuilding the 2.9-liter inline-six and a four-speed manual transmission, overhauling the brakes, and refreshing the suspension as well as refinishing the car in Olde English White over a refurbished red leather and vinyl interior. Equipment includes a red soft top, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, a hood scoop, a tonneau cover, and a heater. This 3000 Mk III is now offered on dealer consignment with a restoration summary and a clean California title.
The car was refinished in Olde English White in 2003 and features a replacement red soft top as well as a tonneau cover. Additional work involved re-plating the chrome and installing a new windshield, grille, and lights. Exterior details include a hood scoop, bright trim, and chrome bumpers with overriders.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured by knock-off spinners and are mounted with 175R15 Michelin tires. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The brake system was overhauled as part of the aforementioned refurbishment. Also, the shocks were rebuilt and the springs replaced.
The 2+2 cabin was reupholstered in 2003 in red leather and vinyl with white piping, and houses front bucket seats and rear cushions. A new wood dash was fitted, the locking glovebox’s liner was replaced, and replacement Karvel-style red carpeting was installed. Koolmat insulation covers the tunnel and driver-side floor panel.
The replacement banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7,000-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 71k miles.
The 2.9-liter inline-six features dual SU HD8 carburetors and was factory rated at 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. The engine was rebuilt by Bob Yule of Autofarm in 2003, which is detailed on a summary displayed at the end of the gallery and involved the following:
Boring the block .020″ over
Resurfacing the cylinder head
Grinding the crankshaft
Repairing the crankshaft
Replacing the lifters, pistons, and rings
Installing an aluminum fuel tank and fuel pump
Re-coring the radiator
Rebuilding the starter and generator
Replacing the timing chain and tensioner
Installing stainless-steel air cleaners
Replacing the oil pump, water pump, and additional components
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, which were also dismantled and refreshed with replacement components in 2003. The flywheel was machined and a three-piece clutch was fitted.
