Car was at auction 9/16

Auction description:
Lot number 130
Sale Price Not Sold
Make & Model Austin-Healey 3000 MkIII Phase 2
Registration PLC 833E
Year 1967
Colour Colorado Red
Chassis No. HBJ8/41892
Engine No. 29D/V/H9091
Documents V5C; MOT September 2017 with no advisories; three old MOTs; Heritage Certificate; letters and bills

Dating from the last year of manufacture, this 1967 BJ8 benefits from all the refinements that were made to the model during its nine-year production life. Sold new in the UK through Kenning Car Mart as a RHD model, it was delivered to a Mr Roberto Martinez, the assistant Attaché to the Argentine Embassy, and registered under the Diplomatic Scheme (the CD plate is still in the boot!). It was painted Colorado red and trimmed in black hide. Other items mentioned on the accompanying Heritage Certificate include wire wheels, overdrive, a heater, adjustable steering wheel and a laminated screen.

Shortly after delivery, Mr Martinez became very ill, spending time in a London hospital. Following his recuperation, he was deemed unfit for further Diplomatic work and shipped off elsewhere. During one of his final hospital visits, he offered the car to Mr Finch, his Consultant Surgeon, who agreed to buy it for £898, the price being suitably reduced by £200 as a thank you for saving his life! Mr Finch, then used the car until selling it to the vendor in 2014, taking it on his honeymoon, collecting his two new-born children from hospital in it and squeezing everyone in for family holidays.

The original service book shows one visit to Kenning Car Mart in 1967. Thereafter a detailed list of the major expenses on the car are on file, showing the accumulation of mileage to the current reading of 147,000 miles from new. The most significant item is a 'new' engine in 2005, although there are no details of who fitted it or whether it was a NOS or reconditioned unit. The car has covered around 6,000 miles since then.

MOTd until September 2017 with no advisories recorded, the vendor informs us that it has proved an instant starter and is great fun to drive. Sadly, a problem with his knee has meant that it is no longer the pleasure that it was and he has made the decision to part with it. In nicely mellowed, original condition, it has been loved for its entire life and has simply been well maintained and given regular exercise. Unmolested Healeys are rare indeed, this desirable three owner 3000 MkIII ticking all of the boxes.

Seller's description:

1967 AUSTIN-HEALEY 3000 MKIII BJ8 - £55,000

This very late build 1967 Austin Healey 3000 MkIII has remarkable history from day one having been owned by the same fastidious London gentleman from new until 2014. Clearly cherished for the entirety of this period the car is supplied with extremely detailed maintenance records written into the original owner’s manual showing every single service item or replacement part, further supported with the supplementary BMC service book still being present with every coupon ripped out and stamped as would be. This Healey originally registered PLC 833E was supplied to Kenning Car Mart Ltd of London in right hand drive configuration, very highly specified with optional hide leather interior, overdrive, wire wheels, heater, adjustable steering column, tonneau cover, a laminated windscreen and road speed tyres. PLC 833E remains in its original colours and specification of Colorado Red with Black interior but with Ivory White duotone added at Rawles Motorsport January 2025 with additional paint correction at the same time. The car has been restored twice, first in 1985 and again in 2014. The more recement work in 2014 included a full re-spray, a re-trim of the front seats and new carpet, re-chroming, a new exhaust, a newly rebuilt engine, new stainless-steel exhaust, the addition of an extra electric radiator fan and electric ignition. The engine was rebuilt to fast road specification and has covered just 5,000 miles since rebuild, makes excellent power and oil pressure. In late 2024 the car was serviced by Rawles Motorsport including new brakes. In 2019 the car received a major service at a cost of £7,000 from a Healey specialist going through the carburettors and fuel system, ignition, brakes and suspension to ensure they are all in top condition. This further included a new radiator, new chrome wire wheels and sticky Avon ZZ tyres. In general PLC 833E is a very smart, original and well-maintained Healey in great condition. The car is extremely rewarding to drive with excellent performance, a very smooth gearbox with a swift overdrive unit plus precise steering. This is a fantastic car for the enthusiast who wants to use and drive their car and whom appreciates history and originality. Sold with MOT, original drivers handbook, original BMC service book, maintenance history, MOT history, British Motor Heritage Certificate of Authenticity, hood bag and tonneau, spare, two sets of keys, jack and hammer, HPI clear.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
