This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was ordered new in December 1966 by the late owner, who at the time was a lieutenant junior grade for the US Navy. Owned in Rhode Island for decades, the car was refurbished from 2011–2013 by Park Place Holdings of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Power is supplied by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and the vehicle is finished in British Racing Green over black vinyl. Features include a black soft top, a top boot, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, dual SU carburetors, a wood dashboard, and a banjo-style steering wheel. This 3000 Mk III is now offered by the seller on behalf of the late owner’s estate with 1967 purchase paperwork, a driver’s handbook, service records dating back to 1967, and Rhode Island registration in the late owner’s name.
Finished from the factory in British Racing Green, the car was repainted in 2013. The folding black soft top has been replaced, and other equipment includes a black top boot, a hood scoop, a driver-side mirror, bright trim, dual exhaust outlets, and chrome bumpers with overriders.
Silver-painted 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 185/65 Hankook Optimo H426 tires. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The braking and suspension systems were overhauled during the aforementioned refurbishment.
The 2+2 cabin was renewed during the refurbishment. The seats are trimmed in black Ambla vinyl with gold-colored piping. Interior appointments include a wood-faced dashboard, a cabin heater, a locking glovebox, a center armrest, black carpeting, rubber floor mats, and a dash-mounted rearview mirror.
The banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 58k miles.
The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. The exhaust-manifold bolts and the battery were replaced in 2019.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. Corrosion is visible on underbody components.
The original owner ordered the Healey through Cars International of Leonia, New Jersey, in December 1966, and it was delivered to the New York port around April 1, 1967.
Paperwork from 1967 shows that the car’s chassis number is HBJ8L40689, although an identification plate is no longer found on the firewall. The car is registered under its engine number: 29KRUH15047. An expired registration slip from 1968 shows that the car was registered to the engine number above at that time.
The vehicle is being sold on its Rhode Island registration, which serves as the ownership document in Rhode Island. The registration expired in February 2025.
