This 1963 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ7 Mk IIA was acquired by the seller in 2023, reportedly from the family of its original owner, and work has since included reupholstering the interior, overhauling the brakes and steering components, rebuilding the carburetors, refreshing the cooling system, and replacing the soft top, exhaust system, clutch master cylinder, fuel tank and pump, ignition components, and the brake master cylinder. The car is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission and is finished in red over red leather with black piping. Equipment includes a black soft top, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, a top boot, a tonneau cover, a hood scoop, a cabin heater, and front bucket seats. This 3000 Mk IIA is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, the owner’s manual, spare parts, a car cover, and a clean Texas title in the seller’s name.
The car came finished from the factory in Colorado Red (RD2) and was repainted a Porsche shade of red in 2002. A replacement black soft top, tonneau cover, and top boot were installed under current ownership. The seller notes various chips and dings around the body.
The 15″ knock-off wire wheels were mounted with 180-HR15 Michelin XAS tires in March 2023. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The brake master cylinder and front brake rotors, pads, and hoses were replaced in 2023 along with the rear wheel bearings, cylinders, hoses, shoes, and seals. The front inner and outer bearings, sway bar bushings, tie rod ends, and steering link were also replaced at that time. The rear shocks are leaking.
The two-seat cabin was refreshed in 2023, including reupholstering the front and rear seats in red leather with black piping and replacing the seat pans, foam padding, carpets, dash pad, heat shields, and door panels. The car is equipped with lap belts, a cabin heater, and a passenger-side grab handle.
The banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths white-dial instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 85k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership.
The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HS6 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 136 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque. The carburetors were rebuilt in March 2023, and additional work under current ownership included adjusting the valves and replacing the following components:
Alternator
Throttle bushings
Ignition coil
Distributor cap
Spark plugs and wires
Water pump
Thermostat
Heater core and hoses
Fuel tank and level sending unit
Fuel pump
Compression test results are provided in the gallery.
The engine tag is viewable above.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock-de Normanville electric overdrive. The clutch master cylinder was replaced and a replacement stainless steel exhaust system installed in May 2024. Leaks are noted from the rear main seal, transmission overdrive drain, and pinion seal.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate lists the factory colors, equipment, and serial numbers as well as a build date in April 1963.
