Auction description:
This Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III was built between February and May 1964 and is #850 of 1,390 “Phase 1” examples produced according to the seller. The car reportedly remained with its original owner until 1989, when it was placed in warehouse storage by its second owner until acquired by the seller in July 1998. Finished in green and ivory over a tan interior, it is powered by a 2,960cc inline-six mated to a 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Modifications include a spin-on oil filter and an aftermarket valve cover. An oil change and tune-up were performed in July 2018. This BJ8 is offered with owner’s and shop manuals, period literature, service records from 1998 on, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, car show awards, and a clean Washington State title in the seller’s name.

The car reportedly underwent rust repair under previous ownership, followed by a color change from Healey Blue and Ivory White to the green and ivory seen here. Period rally-style vent ports are featured in the fender coves. Chrome 15″ wire wheels are secured with knock-off spinners and wear Nexen SB-802 tires.

A black convertible top has replaced the original blue version, and is shown both raised and lowered in photos. A black cover is provided for use when stowed. There are chips and other blemishes in the finish.

The interior was reupholstered from its original blue to the current tan under previous ownership. Features include a wood-rimmed steering wheel on an adjustable column, a Healey-branded wood shift knob, Smiths instrumentation, and burl wood dash veneers. The seller notes that the rear fold-down seatback is missing. The 5-digit odometer indicates just under 70k miles, with total mileage unknown.

The 2,960cc C-series inline-six features dual SU carburetors and was rated at 150 horsepower when new. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual gearbox with electrically-actuated overdrive. Modifications include a spin-on oil filter and an aftermarket valve cover. An oil change and tune-up are said to have been performed by Tom’s Import Toy Sales of Portland, Oregon in July 2018.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate states that this Healey was finished on May 11, 1964 and dispatched to New York three days later. Factory colors and options are also listed along with chassis, engine, and body numbers.

A number of car show awards are included in the sale along with owner’s and shop manuals, an SU carburetor book, period publications and sales literature, keys, and service records from July 1998 on.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
