This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was refurbished under previous ownership before being acquired by the seller in 1996. The car is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six linked to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive and is finished in burgundy with a tan soft top over a tan interior. The car is equipped with 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, a tan top boot, driving lights, Hella horns, wood veneer interior trim, a heater, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, and dual SU carburetors. This BJ8 is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, removed and spare parts, a tonneau cover, two car covers, service records, manufacturer’s literature, a service manual, memorabilia, and a clean Washington State title in the seller’s name.

The car left the factory finished in Colorado Red with a black soft top, and it was repainted burgundy in 1988 and fitted with a tan soft top and top boot cover. Exterior details include chrome bumpers with overriders, dual fender-mounted side mirrors, bright trim, driving lights, headlight stone guards, Hella horns, and twin Ansa Marmitte exhaust tips. The right front fender was repaired in 2008. The soft top is torn, rust is visible in the left-rear wheel well, and other dings and imperfections can be seen in the gallery below.

Chrome 15″ wire wheels with knock-off hubs are mounted with 195/65 Michelin Harmony tires. Stopping power is provided by front disc and rear drum brakes, and maintenance performed in 2017 included replacement of the brake hoses, the rear-axle brake lines, and the rear drum cylinders and shoes.

The 2+2 cockpit features front bucket seats and rear seat pads that were reupholstered in tan leather and vinyl under previous ownership. Wood veneer trim accents the dashboard, and additional appointments include a heater, a locking glove compartment, front and rear lap belts, and manual crank windows.

The three-spoke Moto-Lita steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and supplemental gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 18k miles, approximately 7k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 2.9-liter inline-six features dual SU carburetors and was factory rated at 148 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. In 2022, the ignition timing was adjusted, and the radiator and fuel pump were replaced in 2018. The fuel tank was replaced in 2010.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Damage is visible on the muffler.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists colors, options, and identification numbers as well as a dispatch date of September 12, 1966. Also included in the sale are spare parts, including the original horns, a tonneau cover, service records, manufacturer’s literature, a service manual, and memorabilia.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
