This 1964 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ7 Mk II is a 2+2 convertible that is finished in red over black vinyl upholstery and powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Equipment includes a black soft top, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, chrome bumpers and trim, dual side mirrors, a luggage rack, front disc brakes, Smiths instrumentation, and dual SU carburetors. The car is said to have been acquired by the current owner in 1996 and relocated to California in 2015. Work performed in October 2022 involved fluid changes in addition to refurbishing the carburetors and replacing the ignition components, fuel pump, and exhaust-hanger mounts. This 3000 BJ7 is now offered on dealer consignment with service records since 2016 and a California title.

The car is finished in red and was reportedly repainted under current ownership. Equipment includes a black convertible soft top, chrome bumpers with overriders, a hood scoop, fender-mounted mirrors, a polished fuel-filler cap, and a rear luggage carrier. The selling dealer states that the weatherstripping is dry-rotted, and there are blemishes on various body panels. The seller also notes that the door handles are difficult to operate, and the car does not have a top boot.

Chrome-finished 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with Kumho Power Star 758 tires up front and mismatched Gillette and Americus radial tires at the rear. A spare is located in the trunk, and braking is provided by front discs and rear drums. The brake fluid was flushed in October 2022.

The interior features front bucket seats and contoured rear seats trimmed in black vinyl with red piping that extends to the center console. Appointments include a wooden shift knob, a Smiths heater, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, and a passenger grab handle. Corrosion is visible on the defroster vents as well as on the heater box, and there are cracks in the vinyl on the door panels.

The leather-wrapped banjo-style steering wheel is visibly worn and sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation that includes a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 84k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership. True mileage is unknown.

The 2.9-liter inline-six features dual SU carburetors in addition to an Austin-Healey–branded valve cover and an electronic ignition. Work performed in October 2022 involved fluid changes in addition to refurbishing the carburetors and replacing the fuel pump and ignition components.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with an electrically actuated Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit. Corrosion is visible on underside components, and additional photos are presented in the gallery below. The transmission and differential fluids were flushed in October 2022, at which time the fuel tank was drained and cleaned and the exhaust-hanger mounts were replaced.

The tag above displays the car number HBJ7L24833, whereas the California title adds a leading “64” and transposes the “J” with a “T”.

Bid to $23,500 on 6/20/23

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
